Dildos 101 | How To Choose and Use a Dildo

how-to-use-a-dildo

We’re all for using your fingers, but sometimes that need for something more can have us all eyeing the closest cucumber…and that’s where we come in to replace that inevitable infection with multiple orgasms.

As far as sex toys for women go, vibrators get most of the love. Not that they don’t deserve it, if you want to stimulate your external clitoris vibrators are your best bet. However, stimulating the internal clitoris through touch (think of the come hither motion in the first third of your vagina) or pressure (think of the fullness felt deeper in the vagina during deep penetration) can be immensely rewarding. In fact, a lot of women prefer paired stimulation, i.e., stimulating the internal clitoris (colloquially the g-spot) as well as the external clitoris- that’s right you can have your cake and eat it too.

It’s no surprise then that dildos continue to be immensely popular.  Simultaneously, however, we recognize that investing in a sex toy, especially a dildo, can be intimidating. Rest assured, the popular imagery of massive realistic-looking dildos is far from representative of the actual market for dildos. Dildos come in various shapes and sizes depending on your aesthetic preferences and desired stimulation. So strap in, as we tell you how to go about taking yourself for the ride of your life!

Dildos are fairly self-explanatory at face value. Dildos allow for penetration when you’re alone. They are useful when your partner’s genitalia will not allow for penetration or when you’re looking to explore the exquisite pleasures of double penetration. They are described as phallic-shaped, although it is worth mentioning, phallic does not mean penis lookalike. Dildos come in various shapes and sizes with options for temperature, vibrations and more! An overlooked fact about these toys is how realistic dildos, i.e those that mimic penises,  can help reaffirm gender identity when used as a strap on.

In short, dildos are for all genders and orientations- read on to find the perfect one for your preferred activity!

Types of Dildos

Hunting for dildos can often make you feel like Goldilocks, except there is no room for trial! To make your life easier, ask yourself what you’re hoping to use the dildo for. Depending on whether the answer is g-spot orgasms, partner-play, or anal play, your ideal dildo will vary. While looking at measurements, account for those lovable bellies since they can prevent complete penetration in cases of partner play. Additionally, keep an eye out for the width measurements to ensure you find a dildo that meets your girth requirements.

  • For G-spot stimulation

The G-spot is not located very high up inside the vagina, a short and girthy dildo with a pronounced head is bound to hit the spot every time!

  • For anal play or cervical stimulation

For the highest pleasure, we suggest a long and thin dildo. For prostate stimulation, a curved dildo is more ideal. A note of caution here, if you’re using a toy for anal play, use lubricant and ensure it has a base, i.e is narrow at the tip but wider at the base. This ensures that the toy does not get lost in your rectum leading to a very common but uncomfortable trip to the ER!

  • For combined orgasms

Rabbit Vibrators are designed to stimulate your clitoris with their “bunny ears” while the end hits your g-spot leading to a full-body rush like no other!

  • For double penetration

Now you could invest in two dildos, and just use one in each hole. However, for the best experience, we suggest investing in dildos with double sided-suction cups so they can be connected or just a u-shaped double ended dildo.

  • For partner play

First things first, make sure the dildo you’re investing in can be strapped on. Some dildos come with a harness for this purpose while others require you to purchase a harness separately. Secondly, if you’re using this to pack with, i.e wearing it to give the illusion of a penis, we suggest dildos made of double density silicone- which are softer.

Using a Dildo

  • When you’re alone:

Like all forms of penetration, foreplay is key! Start by stimulating yourself, with your hands, a vibrator, something feathery-whatever works for you. Gradually build your way up to the penetration itself- on as many positions as you’d like! We suggest getting to know your dildo before you start your session, i.e what are the different settings etc. You can incorporate this when you first clean the sex toy as well! Yes, cleaning sex toys before and after every use is required, read more about that here.

  • With a partner:

Communication is key. The wearer cannot feel how far the dildo has penetrated, or if it has slipped out, so the receiver has to be vocal about what works, and what doesn’t. To make this easier, we suggest trying positions that automatically give the receiver more control, eg: rider on top or doggy style.

Remember, the STI risk that accompanies all sexual activities exists here as well. Make sure you use a condom over a dildo if you’re using it with multiple partners, and of course, cross-pollination between the rectum and vagina remains an absolute no!

Happy sexploring!
